My greatest mission in providing this service is to help join the fight against postpartum depression. Having suffered severely myself, and successfully avoiding it after having my own placenta encapsulated and consumed, I became determined to help make this available to more women and bring awareness to the practice. What is placenta encapsulation?  It is the process of preparing the mother's placenta after the birth of her baby(ies), by separating the membranes and umbilical cord from the placenta and rinsing and draining maternal and fetal blood, then dehydrating it to then be ground and placed into capsules for the mother to ingest as she sees fit. The ingestion of the placenta is known as "placentophagy." The purpose of placentophagy by the mother is to reintroduce the beneficial vitamins, minerals, hormones, proteins, and other nutrients to her body following labor and birth to help restore a more balanced body function, prevent "baby blues" and the more serious postpartum depression, to increase breast-milk production, shorten healing time, increase maternal energy levels, and provide and over-all feeling of wellness to aid in the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period in the woman who has just given birth.  They can be found in one of my blog posts, "It's Not About You, It's About Her."

A little bit about me: I am a mother to 7 beautiful and amazing children.  I suffered severe Postpartum Depression after my first 3 children, and began to desperately seek out ways to prevent it from ever happening again. After encapsulating my own placenta and feeling like a whole new woman--I knew I had to provide this to other moms. I didn't have anyone to do mine for me due to financial circumstances at the time, so with a newborn strapped to me in a Moby wrap, and still on postpartum bed rest (I had complications from high blood pressure)--I did my own placenta. The results were overwhelmingly apparent to those around me, and my midwife was impressed.  She started sending me her patients, so I be came formally trained and certified, in order to provide the service safely to those in my community. This is how Intricately Woven Birth Services (formerly known as Love Encapsulated) came to be.

I've been trained and certified through International Placenta & Postpartum Assosication (IPPA) (formerly known as Full Circle Placenta).  Part of the certification process also requires certification in bloodborne pathogens as well as in food handling.  You can rest assured that your placenta is being prepared by trained hands and in a safe manner for the best outcome.  You may choose preparation in your home or my own work space.  Please be advised that there will a significant delay in the finished capsules if preparing in your own home for multiple reasons, as well as an additional charge.  Preparing in my work space enables me to start immediately after delivery and at any and all hours of day or night, which allows me to be done with the process and have the capsules in your hands withing 48 hours after delivery.  It also enables me to supervise the entire process, preventing loss of the placenta in cases of such things as power failure, equipment failure, and accidental temperature control failure.  I always have a back-up dehydrator available, and temperature is checked, and trays are rotated throughout the entire dehydration time.  I do not participate in the "raw" method of encapsulation.  This is due to bacterial contamination concerns.  Dehydrating takes place at 160 degrees for the entire length of the process.  This is a basic food safety requirement.

I have prepared well over 250 placentas in the past 5 years of practicing.  You can feel safe knowing that you are working with a highly trained, experienced, and certified encapsulator when choosing Intricately Woven Birth Services to process your placenta.  I look forward to being a part of gently easing you into your postpartum experience.

If you are interested in hiring me to prepare your placenta, please contact me for my contract and liability form ahead of time so that we can get you set up prior to the birth of your baby.  Once the contract is signed and payment given, I go on call for your due date two weeks prior.  This means that I always have my phone on, and I don't leave town without first contacting you.  This ensures that I am available for immediate processing of your placenta.  It is important that we try to get it completed and have you start taking your capsules by 48 hours postpartum in order to obtain the greatest benefit.
